Too Many Choices! Reducing Selections When Seeking Dental Care

By Billy Maso

Your teenage boys want to play sports, but they must see an orthodontist for a physical and an authorization. To locate the right one, go through the following instructions, so that you can avoid making the wrong choice.

Can you access your dental records on the web? It's a new trend in the industry. The orthodontist you see should provide this choice. If not, look for one that does. The best orthodontists provide cutting edge tactics and technologies to their patients.

When the orthodontist writes a prescription, do they let you know a generic option is available? Does the orthodontist demand that you get the name brand drug only? The orthodontist should be looking out for your best interests, not the drug representative. If you are having financial problems, the orthodontist should work with you to ensure that you still receive the drug that you need at a cost that you can afford.

Dentists need to practice objectivity when dealing with patients with different lifestyles. If you feel he or she is harboring judgment against the decisions you make, or if he/she feels uncomfortable treating you, this is probably the case. You will be better off finding another more accommodating orthodontist to treat you better.

Whenever you are running late for a scheduled appointment, do not avoid calling the orthodontist's office. Many people are too prideful to make that phone call, but the staff needs to know about it as soon as possible. Give them a call to let them know what is preventing you from being there on time.

Research a new orthodontist in your community before visiting him/her. Determine where the orthodontist used to have a practice and why he/she is no longer with that practice. Additionally, search for online reviews about the orthodontist from former patients.

Patients should find out if their dental care providers stay abreast of dental advances and treatments. Do their dentists attend conferences and seminars or are they complacent about learning new dental developments?

Your dentist should listen to you if you complain that a course of treatment is ineffective. If you ask to try an alternative treatment plan and your orthodontist disregards your concerns, you should find a different orthodontist.

If you cannot read the content of the paperwork that you are given, make sure that it is read to you. In the case when you are either in too much pain, too sedated or too incoherent to fully understand, it is okay to ask to be able to sign those documents at a later time.
